The association
An association of enthusiasts, run by volunteers, where every subscriber is a member. All the money we make is reinvested in the infrastructure and in the projects we support: we have no employees and no paid contractors.
Being a MilkyWan subscriber
From your first service, you are a member of the association, with no fee and nothing to apply for. Being a member commits you to nothing, but it opens the door to a community.
The community on Telegram
A channel for subscribers only, with the link in Univers. Geeks, people passionate about networks and self-hosting, a friendly atmosphere, and the team dropping by regularly.
Helping each other
A router to configure, a BGP session that will not come up, a hardware choice? Subscribers help each other, and the team answers too.
The general assembly
Once a year, in person in a different city from year to year, with video conferencing for those who cannot come. Every subscriber votes, and two subscriber representatives are elected for one year to the board of directors.
Votes in Univers
General assembly resolutions are voted on online, from your subscriber area: you can vote even if you cannot attend.
Events
We also meet at network events such as FRnOG or the FeDeRez days, and at the Gamers Assembly, where the association is present.
Becoming a volunteer
Volunteers come from our subscribers. We are not recruiting at the moment, but take part in the discussions and assemblies, and we will call on you when the time comes.
The team
We are a group of passionate engineers, and we run MilkyWan in our spare time. From system administration to graphic design and support, every role is essential!

Hugues
President – Network Engineer
Founder of MilkyWan, freelance network engineer, sysadmin in his spare time and BGP fan. Does his best to keep this association going when he is not on the ski slopes.

François
Vice President – Head of Development and TV
Embedded Linux developer who turned up one day and knocked out an Apple TV app. Also turns coffee machines into robots.

Gary
Treasurer
Runs an IT company. Handles the accounts but cannot do mental arithmetic. Professional troll. Founding member of Team #DataGarage. Spends his time drinking, eating and sleeping.

Marc
Secretary, Head of Subscriber Experience & Tooling
The story goes that he fell into a computer as a toddler, and it has been true love ever since! When he does not know what to do, he tries to help subscribers in distress while dancing in front of a router to speed up fibre deployments. His favourite phrase? When in doubt, reboot ;-)

Gabriel
Technical Lead
Self-taught jack of all trades, in continuous training for life. Faced with a wall he can’t get round, he will dig under it or open a door in it. Believes in kindness, common sense, efficiency and optimisation, all without stress.

Damien
Head of IT Systems
VoIP engineer, API tinkerer and amateur cartographer. Does a bit of development and dabbles in sysadmin when he has to.

Paul
Network Administrator
Railway engineer who studied electrical engineering, but went astray and ended up doing computer networking in trains (just kidding, he loves it). Jack of all trades, master of none.

Nicolas
Security Engineer
Not quite sure how he ended up here: he signed up for fibre broadband (FTTH) and found himself looking after security. Hides an all-too-proudly-owned immaturity under a rapidly receding hairline.

Sébastien
Systems Administrator
Systems engineer who sometimes looks after networks, and who started his toxic relationship with servers far too early. Worships the terminal and is an eternal hater of all proprietary systems. He hates doing the same thing twice, and so tries to automate everything.
The association also thanks Adrien, Alexis F., Alexis V., Aloïs, Antoine, Benoît, Cécile, Charles P., Corentin, Gaëtan, Guilhem, Jack, Maël, Martin, Nicolas, Pierre, PM, Stanislas and Vincent for their past involvement in the association!
Our story
From a few tunnels at home to a national operator.
2016
A network at home
MilkyWan starts in its founder Hugues’s flat: a network between the living room and the bedroom, home-made tunnels and virtual machines at K-Net and Online.net.
2017
A non-profit association
The personal network becomes MilkyWan, a French non-profit association (loi 1901), with infrastructure that pays for itself.
