Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we are asked most often.

This page answers the questions people ask before subscribing, for all of our services. If you are already a subscriber, help with your services is in Univers, the subscriber area; for a question that is not covered here, write to us.

The association and subscribing

Who can subscribe? Do I need to be a member of the association?

Anyone, individual or legal entity, can subscribe, and there is no separate membership to apply for: every subscriber, individual or legal entity, is a member of the association, with no membership fee. Being a member does not oblige you to give any time.

  • Process: you start with the eligibility check, then make your request from the result; a mobile number is required to subscribe.
  • Profile: our offers are aimed at people who are comfortable with computers and networking, who choose, configure and maintain their router themselves, with no support from us.
  • Contact: the team is made up of volunteers and everything is done in writing, never by phone.
  • Individual, business or association: the process is the same; a company gives us its name and SIRET number, and a separate account is created for it.
How do I subscribe, and how long does it take for my request to be processed?

Subscribing starts with the eligibility check: your request, made from the result, creates a ticket, and a volunteer replies by e-mail. The usual steps:

  • the team asks you for a few details: house or floor, whether the home already has fibre, the reference of the fibre wall socket (PTO) if there is one, your mobile number and, depending on the network, the MAC address (the network identifier) of your router;
  • we do not take an order until the home is eligible, and the team rechecks eligibility by hand if in doubt;
  • you sign our terms and conditions and a SEPA direct debit mandate online; a volunteer checks them and creates your Univers account, the subscriber area;
  • you order the service in Univers and pay the first instalment by bank card; it includes the connection fee and, on offers with a minimum term, three months in advance, deducted from the last three monthly payments; later instalments are collected by direct debit;
  • the backhaul operator (the one that carries your line to our network) does the installation and supplies the ONT, the device that converts the fibre signal.

Activation usually takes 3 to 6 weeks, with no guarantee: details are in the answer on installation.

Does the team reply in English?
Yes, the team can reply to you in English, in writing, and the subscription process is the same. Everything is done by e-mail: no calls and no voice appointments. The terms and conditions and the documents to sign are in French; we suggest reading them with a translation tool. Whatever the language, the team does not help you choose, configure or troubleshoot your router.

Eligibility and networks

The check cannot find my address, or says “not eligible” while the ARCEP map or another operator says yes: why?

The ARCEP map (the telecoms regulator) shows that fibre has been deployed in the building; our check shows whether one of our backhaul operators sells it. MilkyWan does not lay fibre: a building can therefore be connectable with another operator without being so with us. Common causes:

  • on some networks, our backhaul operators do not sell, or the network infrastructure operator (the one that built the area’s fibre network) blocks orders;
  • a recent commercial opening sometimes takes a few days to a few weeks to show up in our partners’ systems;
  • the address is incorrectly listed: not found, or several buildings for the same address.

The check is done per building and queries the operators live, in 30 seconds to 2 minutes. If your address is not found, the building code (IMB) read on the ARCEP fibre map often helps to identify the right building. If the result stays negative, the team can neither make the address eligible nor say when it will be, because it has no contact at the network infrastructure operator. Ask the operator directly, then run the check again later; no order is placed before then.

My home is new or has no fibre wall socket: how do I get fibre?

MilkyWan does not lay fibre: installation is carried out by the backhaul operator and its subcontractors, on the network of the network infrastructure operator in your area. The eligibility check shows the status of your building.

  • Building connectable, home without a fibre wall socket (PTO): this is possible. The technician fits the socket and the operator’s device during the appointment. The connection fee is due whether or not the home already has fibre; a home that is only “pre-wired” does not have fibre.
  • Building not eligible (recent construction not yet declared, deployment under way, building not connected): we have no more means than the large operators, and no contact at the network infrastructure operators. Contact them directly or go through your town hall, then run the check again a few months later.
  • Installation is done in the premises concerned, not in a cellar or a shared room.
  • For lead times, see the answer on installation.
When will my address be eligible? Are you available everywhere in France?
We cannot give a date: the schedule depends on the network infrastructure operator in your area, and the team has no access to that information. The wait has ranged from a few months to several years; town halls and public networks in the area sometimes publish a schedule. Once the building is open, our backhaul partners can take a few days to a few weeks to see it: run the check again then. We take neither orders nor quotes until the building is eligible. We cover all of mainland France, Corsica included, wherever a building is eligible with our backhaul operators; Internet access is not possible in the overseas territories. A tunnel, a virtual machine, an AS number (the identifier of a network on the Internet) or transit do not depend on the address.
Which networks (backhaul) do you offer, which should I choose, and why do prices differ from one address to another?

The line is provided by a backhaul operator, which carries your line to our network, supplies the fibre device (ONT) and handles line faults. The networks named on the site are Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom, Free, Axione (including CityFast), Covage, OTHD, Omega, OrneTHD and SIEA, through our backhaul partners Kissgroup, ielo and Eurofiber. The eligibility check shows only the offers possible for your building, and prices vary from one building to another: they depend on what the backhaul operator charges us, on the connection fee and on the minimum term. To choose:

  • Orange is good-quality backhaul, but it charges us for the bandwidth actually used: for heavy use (backups, constant downloads), the team may steer you towards another operator;
  • Bouygues Telecom is good backhaul, including for sustained use;
  • the team recommends offers through Kissgroup first, for the quality of the partner and of its support.

Switching plans later means paying the connection fee again: if you are torn between two speeds with the same operator, take the higher speed straight away. The setup of your router depends on the backhaul operator.

I do not have fibre: do you offer ADSL, VDSL or anything else?

No: ADSL and VDSL are no longer offered. If your address is not eligible for fibre, we have nothing to offer as a fixed-line connection and cannot say when that will change. A building that is eligible for fibre is in any case no longer sold on ADSL or VDSL for new lines. Other options exist:

  • depending on the address, the check may offer cable (FTTLA) or dedicated fibre (FTTO, subject to a quotation);
  • a 4G or 5G mobile data plan, on the Orange or SFR network, with no minimum term, from 1 GB to 1 TB per month, IPv4 only, with a SIM card or eSIM: suited to a backup link or an isolated site;
  • OpenMPTCProuter, to aggregate several links (for example 4G) and gain speed and redundancy;
  • a tunnel (WireGuard, OpenVPN, L2TP or GRE), if what you mainly want is to benefit from the MilkyWan network.

In every case, we supply neither a router nor a modem: you bring your own equipment.

Offers, prices and contract

How much does fibre cost, and what does the connection fee cover?
The price depends on the building: there is no single rate. The eligibility check shows the available offers with their monthly price incl. VAT, their conditions and the connection fee (paid once, at activation). The connection fee is due whether or not the home already has fibre: the backhaul operator invoices it to the association, which passes it on unchanged. It has to be paid again if the line changes, for example when you move or change backhaul operator. Offers with a minimum term also require three months of subscription in advance, deducted from the last three monthly payments. There is no discount or reduced price for a longer minimum term. The first payment is made by bank card, later ones by direct debit; your router is not included, since you bring your own.
Do you offer speeds above 1 Gbit/s (2G, 8G, symmetric)?
Yes, on fibre broadband (FTTH), when the building is eligible. Depending on the network, we offer a plan of up to 8 Gbit/s symmetric on Bouygues Telecom (through our partner Kissgroup), and a Free plan of up to 8 Gbit/s with an SFP+ output (a port for an optical module) and static addresses. There is no 10 Gbit/s FTTH offer, and some networks remain limited to 1 Gbit/s: the check shows what is possible for your building. Speeds are always “up to”, best effort (no guaranteed speed or restoration time), and the speed a neighbour gets guarantees nothing for you. Your router must have a port suited to these speeds (SFP+ or multigigabit RJ45 depending on the ONT), and you choose, configure and maintain it yourself. For a guaranteed or higher speed, dedicated fibre (FTTO) is possible subject to a quotation, from the same check.
Is the speed guaranteed? What latency can I expect for online gaming or remote working?
No, the speed is not guaranteed. On fibre broadband (FTTH), it is best effort: the advertised speed is a maximum, with no commitment on speed, availability or response time, as with all operators on this type of offer. Upload speed depends on the area and the backhaul: the eligibility check shows what is offered at your address. We do not publish any latency measurements and cannot state one from a given city to a given server; ping and routes may vary without notice. If very low and very stable latency is an absolute requirement, this offer may not suit you. If you use a lot of data (several TB per month), say so before subscribing: we will steer you towards suitable backhaul.
How does payment work, and when does billing start?
  • You electronically sign our terms and conditions and a SEPA direct debit mandate. A volunteer checks them, then your Univers account is created.
  • You place the order in Univers and pay the first instalment by bank card. Until this payment is made, the order is not finalised.
  • This first payment covers the first month and the connection fee. For an offer with a minimum term, we also ask for three months in advance, deducted from the last three monthly payments of the term. Prices shown are incl. VAT, except dedicated fibre and IP transit, which are excl. VAT.
  • Later instalments are collected automatically by direct debit. The account must be French or from the European Union (Swiss accounts cannot be debited), and only one bank account is used per subscriber account.
  • For fibre, monthly billing starts on the day the backhaul operator confirms activation to us: no monthly payment until the link is delivered.
  • Each order corresponds to one payment, one invoice and one service.
Is there a minimum term? How do I cancel, and what happens if I move?
  • Minimum term: it depends on the fibre offer. Some have none, others run for 12 months, with three months in advance asked for at subscription and deducted from the last three monthly payments. Tunnels, virtual machines, OpenMPTCProuter and mobile data have no minimum term.
  • Cancellation: it is requested in Univers, from the service concerned, with the Actions button; requests by e-mail are not processed. Without a minimum term, you must give at least one month and ten days’ notice. With a minimum term, you can cancel early, but the remaining monthly payments are due.
  • Moving: the line cannot be transferred. You cancel, then subscribe to a new line after checking the eligibility of the new address. The connection fee is due for each new line and the current minimum term remains due, but we can keep your IP addresses.

Equipment

Do you supply an ONT? With which output (RJ45 or SFP+)? Can I plug an SFP module straight into my router?

MilkyWan supplies no optical equipment: the ONT, the device that converts the fibre signal, is supplied by the backhaul operator of your line, and you plug your router into it. The output depends on the network:

  • Bouygues Telecom: RJ45 port compatible with 10, 5, 2.5 and 1 Gbit/s, no SFP+ output; the ONT is brought by the technician on the day of installation.
  • Free: SFP+ port; a DAC cable (direct-attach copper cable) is normally supplied, otherwise you need an SFP+ optic on each side and a fibre between the two. Your router must therefore have an SFP+ port.
  • Orange: RJ45 output.
  • SIEA: RJ45 output; the router’s WAN port plugs into port 1 of the device.

Replacing the ONT with an SFP module in your router is not possible: the supplied ONT is mandatory, and bypassing it means losing the support of the backhaul operator as well as ours. If your router has only SFP+ ports and the ONT outputs RJ45, you need an SFP+ to RJ45 module suited to the speed (10 Gbit/s for a plan of 8 Gbit/s). The router remains your responsibility, with no assistance from us.

Why does MilkyWan not supply a router? Is my router compatible, which one should I choose?

Everyone brings their own router and keeps the freedom to choose their equipment. The team recommends no brand or model and provides no support for choosing, configuring or maintaining it: our offers are aimed at people who are self-sufficient in networking. The criteria depend on the backhaul shown by the eligibility check:

  • national backhaul: PPPoE (login by username and password), sometimes in a VLAN (a separate virtual network), and DHCPv6-PD (automatic delegation of the IPv6 prefix);
  • SIEA network: DHCP and DHCPv6-PD;
  • Free backhaul: static addressing and an SFP+ port.

In every case, the router must accept an IPv4 address as a /32 on its WAN interface, with a gateway outside the subnet. The ONT supplied by the backhaul operator is mandatory; its output is RJ45, except with Free (SFP+). On very fast PPPoE plans, few routers sustain the maximum speed: the team has seen about 4 Gbit/s in practice on a plan of up to 8 Gbit/s.

Which settings should I put in my router (PPPoE or DHCP, VLAN, MAC address)?

The settings depend on the backhaul network of your line; the exact values are sent to you during the order, once the installation appointment is confirmed.

NetworkModeVLAN
Bouygues TelecomPPPoE (username and password), DHCPv6 for IPv6yes
OrangePPPoE, DHCPv6 for IPv6no
Freestatic addresses for IPv4 and IPv6yes
SIEADHCP and DHCPv6no
Other networks (SFR, Covage, OTHD…)given when orderinggiven when ordering

With PPPoE, the IPv4 address is negotiated at connection: nothing to enter by hand, enable automatic addition of the default route; the gateway is not in your subnet, because it is a point-to-point link. With Free, you enter the addresses and gateway we send you. On SIEA, we register the MAC address (the network identifier) of your router’s WAN port: give it to us before activation, then the new one if you change router. Router configuration remains your responsibility, with no assistance from us.

Switching provider and installation

I am with another operator: who cancels my old subscription, and will there be an outage?
Cancelling your old operator is up to you: nothing is automatic and we do not do it for you. Wait until your MilkyWan connection works before cancelling, even if it means paying for two subscriptions for a few days. The outage is usually limited to the backhaul operator technician’s visit, since your existing line is taken over. On the SIEA network, if the fibre device already in place is a gigabit type, the switchover lasts only a few minutes; if it has to be replaced or a new one fitted, the outage can last up to 3 working days. We do not refund the cancellation fees of your old operator, and the connection fee is due even if the home already has fibre. Plan for your own router, compatible with the connection offered at your address.
Can I keep my current line or have two fibres at home?
As a rule, no. With fibre broadband (FTTH), there is normally only one fibre wall socket (PTO) per home, and a line cannot belong to two operators at once: your existing line is taken over, with no possibility of keeping it in parallel or of switching to us temporarily. The network infrastructure operator in your area decides, and it grants a second socket only in rare cases. Cancelling the old subscription is your responsibility: wait until the MilkyWan connection is active. For a backup link, the team recommends a different technology, such as 4G/5G or satellite; we offer 4G/5G mobile data plans with no minimum term, on the Orange or SFR network, IPv4 only. A connection of another type can also stay in place alongside the fibre. For a site that must be redundant, dedicated fibre (FTTO) is possible subject to a quotation.
How does installation work: how long does it take, and how does the technician appointment work?

Activation usually takes 3 to 6 weeks, with no guarantee, depending on the backhaul operator, the availability of our volunteers and the technicians’ schedule in your area. The usual sequence:

  • we send your order to the backhaul operator;
  • depending on the operator, you choose your slot through an appointment link, the operator calls you, or we suggest a date for you to confirm;
  • the time is approximate: the technician may arrive several hours later, and the visit lasts 1 to 4 hours; someone must be present, otherwise let us know so it can be rescheduled;
  • the ONT is supplied by the backhaul operator, by parcel or brought by the technician, who makes the connection on the network side and checks the optical link; they do not do any building work at your home, and a blocked duct (the sheath that carries the fibre) remains your responsibility;
  • before the appointment, we send you the connection settings: the link works as soon as the ONT is synchronised;
  • if your home is not yet connected to the fibre network (installation on demand), allow several months, and we cannot shorten that time;
  • in the Ain (SIEA network), if a device has to be fitted or replaced, activation can take up to 3 working days after the visit, with an outage in the meantime.
What should I do if installation is blocked (blocked duct, saturated connection point, building management)?

It all depends on where the blockage is; in every case, we have no more means than other operators, because we use the same backhaul operators.

  • On your property (blocked duct, severed sheath, no way through): works on private land are your responsibility, whatever the provider. Do them, or have them done, before the appointment; we have no contractor to recommend.
  • On public land or on the network (blocked chamber, saturated connection point, building not connected): only the network infrastructure operator for the area can act; the town hall can tell you whom to contact. We have neither contact nor leverage there: if Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free are blocked, so will we be.
  • Once the order is placed, we follow the case with the backhaul operator and pass on its feedback. If the operator refuses the order, it is cancelled and refunded.
  • For a recent address that is incorrectly listed, it is the building code (IMB) that counts for the order, even if the displayed address is inaccurate.
  • If nothing moves, wait for the address to become eligible, then run the check again.

IP addresses

Does my fibre connection have a fixed public IPv4 address, which IPv6 prefix will I get, and can I have several IPv4 addresses?
Yes: every MilkyWan fibre connection includes a fixed public IPv4 address and an IPv6 /48 prefix (enough for 65,536 /64 subnets). Depending on the backhaul, the prefix is delegated automatically (DHCPv6-PD) or provided by static routing. Addresses do not change in normal use: if a network reorganisation required it, which has never happened, we would warn you at least one month ahead. Once the connection is delivered, you can add up to 10 additional IPv4 addresses, at €5 per month incl. VAT per address, subject to availability, on a PPPoE or static IP access: a DHCP access takes a single address. They are routed to your router, which must be able to handle several public addresses; we provide no support on its configuration. As IPv6 is plentiful, a single IPv4 address with port forwarding is often enough. We do not rent IPv4 blocks; on a tunnel, the public IPv4 address is an option and the /48 is included, and on mobile data IPv6 is not available.
Can I host a mail server at home on a MilkyWan connection (port 25, reverse DNS, address reputation)?
Yes, you can run a mail server on your fibre connection, port 25 included. Behind a tunnel, you need the public IPv4 option (tunnel €3 per month incl. VAT, first IPv4 address €3 incl. VAT): without it, a tunnel is not suitable for mail. Reverse DNS (PTR, the name associated with an IP address) is set by you in Univers, the subscriber area, for IPv4 as well as IPv6; the chosen name must match a valid A or AAAA record. In IPv6, the reverse zone can also be delegated to your own name servers. We cannot guarantee that an address is absent from reputation lists, which are kept by third parties; our fibre addresses are registered as those of a residential Internet provider. Follow good practice (consistent reverse DNS, no unsolicited bulk sending): a reported abuse can lead to suspension of the service. If you prefer not to run a server, the Mail plan (€18 per year incl. VAT) provides one 5 GB mailbox with IMAP, SMTP, webmail and anti-spam.

Businesses

Do you offer dedicated fibre (FTTO), and how do I get a quote?
Yes. Dedicated fibre (FTTO, a fibre reserved for a single site) is open to everyone, individuals included, subject to a quotation; it is however not our main activity, which centres on fibre broadband (FTTH). It is supplied by a backhaul operator, and its price depends on the address, the speed and that operator: prices, excl. VAT, are shown in the eligibility check. The minimum term is 12 months on most offers; when ordering, you pay the first month, the connection fee and three months in advance, deducted from the last three monthly payments. Depending on the offer, the backhaul operator may provide a guaranteed speed and a 4-working-hour restoration guarantee. To get a price, run the check, choose dedicated fibre and make your request from the result, with a mobile number and, for a company, its SIRET number. MilkyWan remains an association of volunteers, with no commitment on timing from us: for strong guarantees or support at any hour, a professional operator will be more suitable.
Can a company or an association subscribe to fibre, with an invoice in its name?
Yes. A company, an association or another professional can subscribe: the contract and invoices are then in its name. Give us the name of the organisation and its SIRET number (or association number). The person who signs must be able to bind the organisation; otherwise, give us the contact of someone who can. The process is then the same as for an individual: terms and conditions and SEPA mandate to sign, Univers account creation, order and first instalment by card. Fibre broadband prices are shown incl. VAT; our invoices show the amount excl. VAT and the VAT, the recovery of which is something to discuss with your accountant. A company of several dozen people often gets by with fibre broadband, but it remains best effort (no guaranteed speed or restoration time), and you manage your own router: if the connection is vital to your activity, weigh that before subscribing. For a more demanding need, dedicated fibre (FTTO) is possible subject to a quotation, with a 12-month minimum term on most offers; we do not offer telephony.
Can you connect several sites, or a temporary event?
For several sites, each site has its own connection, which you check at its building with the eligibility check; it offers fibre broadband or dedicated fibre (FTTO, subject to a quotation). If the check finds nothing for a building, we cannot offer anything, including for new premises or a datacentre. Our connections are routed Internet access, not layer 2 links where the sites would share one local network; a tunnel with BGP (the protocol for exchanging routes between networks) lets you keep the same address across several links. For a temporary event, we do not offer an FTTH connection for a few weeks or a month or two, because delivering then cancelling takes several hours of volunteer work; with dedicated fibre (FTTO), the request can be considered, and an event can also be connected through sponsorship. Activation in any case takes several weeks (see installation). For an exceptional need, write to us: the team will look at the case with its partners, with no guarantee.

Tunnels and OpenMPTCProuter

What is a MilkyWan tunnel for: hosting at home, getting around CGNAT, having a fixed IP?

A tunnel links your router or your machine to the MilkyWan network: your traffic leaves with fixed addresses that belong to us, whatever your Internet provider. It is the usual solution if your connection is behind CGNAT (an IPv4 address shared between several users, common on 4G/5G and on some fibre or satellite connections) or if your address changes, and you want to host services at home.

  • Price: €3 per month incl. VAT, with no minimum term, whatever the protocol (WireGuard, OpenVPN, L2TP or GRE), in the region of your choice: Paris, Lyon or Geneva.
  • Addresses: a routed, fixed and dedicated IPv6 /48 prefix is included for all protocols. Without options, IPv4 only works outbound: with WireGuard and GRE, the tunnel is IPv6-only and NAT64 gives access to IPv4; with OpenVPN and L2TP, you get a private IPv4 address behind a CGNAT. Either way, no inbound IPv4 connections. To expose services over IPv4, take the fixed public IPv4 option: €3 per month incl. VAT for the first, then up to 10 additional IPv4 addresses at €5 incl. VAT each. Taken with the order, it is delivered with the tunnel; added to a tunnel already delivered, it is set up by hand by the team.
  • Protocol: behind a NAT or CGNAT, WireGuard, OpenVPN and L2TP are suitable; GRE needs a public IP address on your side.
  • Protection: DDoS protection (against saturation attacks) is included.
  • Your services: once the public IPv4 address is assigned to your router, they can be reached on that address, and their security is your responsibility.
  • What we do not do: installation, hand-holding, or a proxy service such as a “Cloudflare tunnel”. A reverse proxy can be set up on a virtual machine with us.
How do I order a tunnel, at what price, with what minimum term?

A tunnel has no minimum term; its price and the addresses provided are detailed in What is a MilkyWan tunnel for. To order, tell us what you need (intended use, protocol, region, public IPv4 or not) and your full contact details, postal address and mobile number included. Then:

  • you electronically sign our terms and conditions and a SEPA direct debit mandate;
  • a volunteer checks them and creates your Univers account, the subscriber area;
  • you subscribe to the service in Univers and pay the first instalment by bank card, with later ones collected by direct debit.

There is no guaranteed lead time, no urgent delivery and no reduced rate. We provide the service settings, with no assistance on your equipment.

Which IP addresses come with a tunnel?
The included IPv6 /48, IPv4 access without the option (NAT64 or CGNAT depending on the protocol) and the public IPv4 option are described in What is a MilkyWan tunnel for. The /48 is provided whatever the protocol, OpenVPN included, and the interconnection addresses between your router and ours are fixed. Without BGP, the /48 cannot be shared between several tunnels; to split it up, you can use a virtual machine with us, which gets its own /48. Public IPv4 addresses stay fixed, and you would be warned at least one month ahead if they had to change. Reverse DNS is set by you in Univers, the IPv6 reverse zone can be delegated, and an additional /48 can be granted on justification.
Is the tunnel compatible with my router? Can it be doubled up, or keep the same IP on a backup link?

The tunnel is set up on your own router or machine, with one of four protocols, all at the same price:

  • WireGuard and OpenVPN pass through NAT and work on macOS, Linux and Windows;
  • L2TP also passes through NAT; it is plain L2TP, without IPsec (an encryption layer) or tunnel password, with only a username and password;
  • GRE needs a public IP address on your side.

Check that your equipment handles the chosen protocol: we do not help you choose or configure the router. A tunnel serves a single device at a time; for a second device, you need a second tunnel. For redundancy, take a second tunnel in another region; this requires BGP (the route exchange protocol), and costs nothing more than that second tunnel, and you manage the priority between your addresses. A setup of “fibre in normal times, 4G or 5G as backup” with the same public IPs is possible: the tunnel goes through one link or the other, or stays up permanently to keep a fixed IP.

Does a MilkyWan tunnel improve speed or latency, or protect against attacks?
A tunnel does not create bandwidth: it only sends your traffic through the MilkyWan network. If your connection is capped, or your Internet provider is congested in the evening, a tunnel will not make it faster. Speed is best effort (no guarantee), for reasonable use: even if a protocol can reach 1 or 2 Gbit/s, staying there permanently is not reasonable. For speed and latency, WireGuard and L2TP are recommended, but the right protocol is mostly the one your router handles well. All our tunnels include DDoS protection (against saturation attacks), which is not designed for use exposed to regular attacks, such as hosting game servers. Finally, a tunnel avoids exposing the address of your home connection, since your services are reached on the tunnel’s addresses.
What does the OpenMPTCProuter (OMR) offer include, and how do I subscribe?

OpenMPTCProuter aggregates several Internet links (4G, fibre) to increase speed and provide redundancy: we host the OMR server, you keep your links and your router.

PlanSpeedPrice
OMR Megaup to 100 Mbit/s€7 per month incl. VAT
OMR Gigaup to 1 Gbit/s€11.50 per month incl. VAT
  • Both plans have no minimum term and no trial period. They include 2 to 6 links to aggregate, one public IPv4 address (no additional addresses available), a routed IPv6 /48 and DDoS protection (against saturation attacks).
  • We do not offer more than 1 Gbit/s: OMR is not designed for more.
  • The router at your end is your responsibility, hardware and configuration, with no support from us.
  • We manage the server, with no SSH access for you; updates are requested from the team, and we wait a few weeks after a release to avoid buggy versions.
  • Subscription: terms and conditions and SEPA mandate signed electronically, Univers account created by a volunteer, then subscription and first instalment by card; later ones are collected by direct debit.

The team is made up of volunteers, with no guarantee on timing or speed. Depending on your need, a tunnel or a virtual machine is sometimes more suitable, and we will tell you.

Virtual machines, web and housing

How do I order a virtual machine, at what price and with which specifications?

You build your virtual machine to order, with no minimum term and monthly billing. It runs on our Proxmox hypervisors in a cluster (several servers that take over from one another), in the region of your choice: Paris, Lyon or Geneva.

  • System: Debian, Ubuntu or Rocky, installed for you; your own image (BSD or other) is possible on request.
  • Monthly prices incl. VAT: a €0.50 base fee, then €1 per vCPU (virtual processor), €1 per GB of memory up to 8 GB then €1.50 beyond, €0.05 per GB of NVMe storage (10 GB minimum). The minimum (1 vCPU, 1 GB, 10 GB) comes to €3 per month, base fee included. Daily backup is optional.
  • Network: native IPv6 with a routed /48 prefix, NAT64 to reach IPv4. Public IPv4 is optional: €3 per month incl. VAT for the first, then €5 incl. VAT per additional address, up to 10 addresses in total. DDoS protection included, bandwidth for reasonable use.
  • When ordering: preferably take the IPv4 address from the start, because adding or removing it later requires a volunteer to step in. Reverse DNS is set by you in Univers.
  • Subscription: terms and conditions and SEPA mandate signed electronically, Univers account created by a volunteer, then subscription and first instalment by card; later ones are collected by direct debit.

You need to be comfortable administering a machine. The team is made up of volunteers, support is provided as availability allows, and there is no trial period.

Do you offer web, mail or DNS hosting?

Yes, on a shared server on our network, over IPv4 and IPv6, with three yearly Web and Mail plans: Web €24, Mail €18, Web + Mail €36 (prices incl. VAT).

  • Web: one domain with unlimited subdomains, 10 GB of space, one MySQL database, 200 GB of traffic per month, SFTP access, PHP 8.5.
  • Mail: one 5 GB mailbox, unlimited aliases and forwards, IMAP, SMTP and webmail.
  • In all plans: automatically renewed TLS certificate, daily backup kept for 30 days, anti-spam on mail. Your domain name stays with the registrar of your choice.
  • Options: €12 per year per 10 GB block, €6 per year per additional database, €12 per year per additional mail address.
  • Domain redirect: free, up to 10 per contract. Another of your domains redirects to the hosting’s domain (301 redirect, www included); for its mail, you choose: none, all to one of your addresses with us, or address by address if the domain has its mail with us.
  • DNS: zones hosted on ns1 to ns4.milkywan.fr, signed with DNSSEC (a signature that protects answers against tampering). They are free as soon as you have a service with us, otherwise €6 per year per zone.

Everything is managed from Univers, the subscriber area. For a heavier application (for example Nextcloud), a virtual machine is more suitable, but we do not administer it.

How does datacentre housing work?

We host your equipment in rack format (19 inches) in three datacentres: DC2Scale in Vélizy-Villacoublay, moji1 in Nanterre and UltraEdge in Lyon-Vénissieux. Non-rackable equipment (a desktop NAS, for example) is not accepted. Housing prices are incl. VAT.

  • Price: €60 per month per U (unit of rack height), with 100 W and 10 Gbit/s for reasonable use included per U, 3-month minimum term. Additional power, made to measure: €0.30 per month per W.
  • Network: one routed IPv4 address and one IPv6 /48 included, on a 1G copper or 10G fibre port; up to 10 additional IPv4 addresses at €5 per month each, set up by hand by the team; private BGP delivery free on request; out-of-band management port (iDRAC, iLO) over IPv6 only and serial console from Univers, included. DDoS protection included.
  • Access: by appointment, accompanied by a member of the team. As everyone is a volunteer, allow several days, sometimes several weeks, before a visit.
  • Limits: no service guarantee, support as availability allows, maintenance mostly in the evening and at night. Beyond 6U, write to us.
  • Use: the offer is not suited to commercial hosting that is highly exposed to attacks (game servers, server rental).

AS, LIR and BGP

How do I get an AS number and an IPv6 prefix through your LIR, and at what price?

MilkyWan is an LIR (local Internet registry), a member of the RIPE NCC, the body that allocates Internet resources in Europe. We make the requests to the RIPE NCC for you (sponsoring) and can also redistribute our own addresses (PA). Resources are in the name of an individual or legal entity, visible in the RIPE database. The RIPE NCC asks for official supporting documents. LIR service prices are incl. VAT:

  • AS number (the identifier of your network for routing): €75 per year, plus €50 set-up fee.
  • IPv6 PI /48 prefix (independent of any provider): €100 per year, plus €100 set-up fee. You need an AS number to get one. AS and PI taken together: €100 set-up fee instead of €150. The RIPE NCC does not grant a PI larger than a /48.
  • IPv6 PA /48 prefix or larger (from our addresses): €25 per year, free if you take transit from us.
  • Billing: per calendar year with proration, cancellation before 15 December.
  • IPv4: we do not rent any; if you have your own block, it can be routed through our tunnels.
  • To learn: a tunnel with BGP and a private AS avoids any dealings with the RIPE NCC.

These services are aimed at people proficient in BGP, with no guidance or support on configuration. ROAs (the attestations that authorise the announcement of your prefixes) are handled on our side, and subscription follows the usual process through Univers.

Can I run BGP with my AS: on a tunnel, fibre, a VM or in a datacentre?

Yes, depending on the medium. To announce your AS and your prefixes, you need the IP transit service, billed on a committed monthly rate: from €10 excl. VAT for 10 Mbit/s to €150 excl. VAT for 1 Gbit/s, IPv4 and IPv6, with each Mbit/s above the commit billed at €0.50 excl. VAT, at the 95th percentile, which leaves out peaks. Your objects must be declared in the RIPE routing database (IRR): we rely on it and do not ask for a letter of authorisation.

  • Tunnel: transit is delivered over a GRE or WireGuard tunnel, included in the transit price along with its interconnection addresses, with up to 4 BGP sessions at no extra cost; the backup tunnel is included too. Over a tunnel, the commit goes up to 250 Mbit/s. Without a public AS, a tunnel (L2TP for example) allows BGP with a private AS, at no charge for BGP.
  • Fibre: no BGP directly on fibre broadband; you set up a tunnel on it. Dedicated fibre (FTTO) is possible subject to a quotation.
  • Virtual machine: transit can be delivered on a VM, notably when the tunnel cannot have a fixed public IPv4 address. For a small need, the VM’s BGP option, at €5 per month incl. VAT, includes 10 Mbit/s committed; above that, you need IP transit.
  • Datacentre: delivery on a dedicated 1G or 10G port, or on equipment in housing (transit extra). The connecting cable inside the datacentre (cross-connect) is at your expense; private BGP is free on request with housing.

No configuration help is provided: these services assume a good command of networking. We do not deliver transit to those who resell anti-DDoS.

What is the 95th percentile and how is it measured?

IP transit throughput is measured every 5 minutes on the delivery port (SNMP counters), in each direction. Over the calendar month, these measurements are sorted from highest to lowest and the highest 5% are discarded, about 36 hours of peaks in a 30-day month: the next value is the 95th percentile. It is calculated separately for inbound and outbound traffic, and the higher of the two is what counts.

  • As long as this 95th percentile stays within your committed rate, nothing more is billed, even if you went over it during short peaks.
  • Above it, each Mbit/s of overage, rounded up to the next Mbit/s, is billed €0.50 excl. VAT on the following month’s invoice, as a separate line.
  • The BGP 10 Mbit/s option of virtual machines has no billed overage: above 10 Mbit/s, you need IP transit.

In Univers, the transit page shows the 95th percentile for each month, inbound and outbound, and any overage.

Mobile data and television

Do you offer data SIM cards, with a public IP?

Yes. We offer data-only mobile data plans (no calls or SMS) on 4G and 5G, on the Orange or SFR network, from 1 GB to 1 TB per month, with no minimum term, as an eSIM or a physical SIM card. A fixed public IPv4 address is available as an option, for €3 per month incl. VAT. Our plans do not offer IPv6; for IPv6, a MilkyWan tunnel provides a routed /48. Things to know before subscribing:

  • when the monthly allowance is used up, the connection is cut until the 1st of the following month or until a top-up;
  • a top-up is only valid until the end of the current month, so it is better to do it at the start of the month; it is not applied automatically and may take a little time;
  • the eSIM is quicker to get: sending a physical SIM depends on volunteers and stock, and can take from several days to several weeks;
  • on a 4G allowance without the 5G option, moving to 5G later means cancelling then taking out a new subscription;
  • you supply and manage your own 4G/5G router, with no support from us.

Given the prices, these plans mainly suit a backup link or professional use, rather than an individual’s main connection.

Do you offer television and landline telephony?
  • Television: yes. MilkyWan TV is open to any MilkyWan connection (fibre, tunnel, OpenMPTCProuter, mobile data), as long as you reach the Internet through the MilkyWan network, at no extra cost. It gives access to a selection of national and international channels, which we capture ourselves and broadcast without re-encoding. The app is available on Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android TV and Android, signed in with your Univers account; you can also play the M3U playlist in a player such as VLC, Kodi, Jellyfin or TiviMate. This service is provided with no guarantee of quality and no assured support, although we fix problems as best we can.
  • Landline telephony: no, we only provide Internet access, but you can use the voice over IP (VoIP) service of a third-party provider of your choice, with no particular compatibility to check. We do not recommend a provider, and we offer neither a business switchboard nor channel distribution for a hotel or an establishment.

Life of the association

How can I help the association or take part in its life?
To support the association, take a service with us, even a small one, such as a virtual machine or a tunnel. To become a volunteer, you must first be a member, so have a service, and take some part in the discussions and meetings: the team does not recruit from outside. It has no open need today and will call on members the day that changes. Every member belongs to the association at no fee and can vote at the annual general meeting, which can be attended by video conference. Two members’ representatives, elected for one year from among the individual members, sit on the board of directors. Notices are sent through the internal mailing list: do not unsubscribe from it.
